Đây là lần đầu tiên trong 6 năm qua, nhạc rap bị "hắt hủi" tại giải Grammy, khi không có đại diện tại các hạng mục như Album của năm, Ghi âm của năm, Ca sĩ của năm... Ca sĩ Nas, chủ nhân của album Hip-Hop is Dead được đánh giá cao trong dòng nhạc rap, phàn nàn rằng, thể loại này dù đang được công chúng ưa chuộng lại bị giới hàn lâm coi thường.

Trong số 8 đề cử của Mary J. Blige có Ghi âm của năm, Ca khúc của năm (bài Be without You) và Album R&B của năm (cho The Breakthrough). 2006 hứa hẹn là một năm đại thắng của nữ ca sĩ này, sau khi cô càn quét hầu hết danh hiệu lớn tại giải Billboard hôm 5/12. Mary nói: "Tôi còn muốn chiến thắng nhiều hơn nữa. Đĩa Breakthrough của tôi ca ngợi những chiến công, khuyên chúng ta phải đấu tranh để làm người chiến thắng chứ không chấp nhận là nạn nhân". Các album FutureSex/LoveSounds của Justin Timberlake, Stadium Arcadium của Red Hot Chili Peppers, St. Elsewhere của Gnarls Barkley cùng cạnh tranh giải Album của năm.

Red Hot Chili Peppers được 6 đề cử. Dixie Chicks, Mayer, James Blunt, Prince cùng có cơ hội dành 5 cỗ máy đĩa hát vàng. Lễ trao giải Grammy sẽ được tổ chức tại Los Angeles (Mỹ) vào ngày 11/2/2007, với 31 hạng mục và 108 danh hiệu.
