The Eiffel Tower shut down Friday as staff protest the proliferation of pickpockets. Tourists had to fend for themselves.
And while police are on hand chasing down illegal street sellers near the tower -- workers say they need more help.
"It's a growing problem, there have always been pickpockets at the Eiffel Tower, but now we really are facing an organized network and that's the reason why we ended up stopping work so we could be heard and to request the necessary police forces here."
An Australian tour guide calls it an overreaction.
"If they are sensible and carry their bags at the front of them and hold their arms over them there is not much anybody can do and I have never had anybody lose anything or being pickpocket in all the groups I brought. So, if you are sensible, I think you are fine."
On Thursday, French authorities unveiled a security plan aimed at protecting tourists visiting the French capital this summer.
